NEW Zoo - Wilds of Costa Rica 2024

Following an amazing conservation trip to Africa in June 2023, the NEW Zoological Society has collaborated with GLOBUS to offer an exciting trip to the Wilds of Costa Rica.  Join the NEW Zoo Director Carmen Murach, Senior Zookeeper Jessica, and representatives of the NEW Zoological Society as we spend 10 days exploring three completely different micro-climates, each with its own flora and fauna.

Return: November 3, 2024. Flight home from San Jose, Costa Rica to Green Bay, WI

Bookings will be accepted until Friday, April 19, 2024.  Space is limited to 32 passengers.

Price for Double Occupancy:

  • Price $5958 per person.
    *This price is dependent on having a total of twenty-five passengers or more traveling on the tour. Should we have a lower number of passengers at the time of travel, the price per person increases to $6725. You will have the option to pay the higher price or withdraw from the tour on or before April 15, 2024. If you choose to withdraw from the tour because of the higher pricing, you will receive a full refund minus the cost of airfare since your flight will be purchased at the time of booking. Your flight will be cancelled, and you will receive a Delta Airlines credit to use for a future flight. You will NOT receive a cash/credit card refund for the cost of the flight that was booked for you.
  • Deposit of $1700 per person is due at booking.
  • Final Payment Due: Friday, July 19, 2024.
  • There is an additional $100 processing fee if a credit card is used for deposit/payment. There is no fee if payment is made with a personal or cashier's check. Cash is not accepted.

Single Supplement is an additional $827, and space is very limited.

*Price includes: roundtrip Main Cabin airfare with Delta Airlines, land tour with the excursions and activities listed in the itinerary, all lodging, pre-paid gratuities for the Globus Tour Director and motorcoach driver, prepaid gratuities for all meals, roundtrip group airport transfers in San Jose, and Travel Protection priced at $359 per person. Price also includes porterage service for one piece of luggage per person, tips to baggage porters and hotel staff. Meals included are 9 breakfasts, 9 lunches, and 9 dinners with 1 beer, wine, or non-alcoholic drink per person, per meal.

**Not included in the tour price: airline checked baggage fees, passport fees, meals not included in the itinerary, all items of a personal nature such as laundry, cleaning, telephone, internet, or fax expenses, beverages including liquors.

Airfare Information

  • Roundtrip Main Cabin airfare with Delta Airlines is included in the package price.
  • Airline checked baggage fees are NOT included in the package price. The first checked bag is $30 each way, per person, and must be less than 50 pounds. You are allowed one carry-on bag and one personal bag, such as a backpack, for free.
  • Seats will be assigned at booking after the deposit is received.
  • You do have the option to purchase these exact flights on your own to use Delta SkyMiles points or upgrades; however, your flight reservation will not be monitored by Sunset Family Travel. It is important to be on the same flights as the group to ensure your roundtrip airport transfers are included.
  • CANCELLATION POLICY: The travel insurance included in the package price does not cover your flights. If you need to cancel your vacation, you will be given a Delta Airlines travel voucher to use toward a future flight. You will NOT receive a cash/credit refund for your cancelled flight.

DAY 2 – SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26 - SAN JOSE – TORTUGUERO

Early in the morning, depart to the Tortuguero area. On the way you will pass through the Braulio Carrillo National Park, a flora and fauna sanctuary covered by an emerald-green mass of vegetation. You will have the chance to see open pasture lands, small farming towns, and will also notice a change in the climate as it becomes a bit warmer and humid but still pleasant. Breakfast will be on the way at El Ceibo Restaurant

The journey will continue to the embarking point deeper into the Caribbean side, where boats are waiting to transfer you to the lodge. A two-hour boat ride will take you through the canals sheltered in the jungle of the rain forest. From the boat, you will be able to admire the unique flora and fauna of this area. Upon arrival, there will be a short briefing of the lodge and the activities included during your stay, followed by lunch. Activities included at the lodge are guided visit to the Sea Turtle Conservancy and the picturesque town of Tortuguero, guided tours of the hotel’s private trails and guided boat tour through the Tortuguero Canals.

In the afternoon you will visit the village of Tortuguero where you will learn the lifestyle of local residents and the significant conservation efforts that have developed to protect the sea turtles that come to spawn each year along the twenty-two miles of the protected coastline. Visit the Sea Turtle Conservancy, an educational center located in the heart of Tortuguero National Park, one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in the world for green turtles.

Each guest will receive a Turtle Adoption membership from the Conservancy

DAY 3 – SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27 – TORTUGUERO

Tortuguero is a great place for ecotourism lovers. Today you will explore the secondary canals of this paradisiacal place with your private guide, where you will see different species of mammals, birds and reptiles. Tortuguero offers full contact with Mother Nature. Much of the National Park extends along its unspoiled beaches that serve as refuge for spawning of the sea turtles which occurs between the months of July to September.

After lunch we will continue exploring Tortuguero National Park and take a walk and visit Cerro Tortuguero that has a viewpoint located at the highest point of Cerro Tortuguero, where you can see the entire network of canals of the Tortuguero National Park.

DAY 4 – MONDAY, OCTOBER 28 – TORTUGUERO – SARAPIQUI – ARENAL VOLCANO AREA

After breakfast at the lodge your journey continues with a boat transfer back to the disembarking point in Caño Blanco. Head to the area of Guapiles, where lunch will be served at a local restaurant.

After lunch visit the La Selva Biological Station for a guided tour. La Selva is one of the world’s most important sites for tropical ecosystem research.

Visit La Fortuna Waterfall.

Today experience the Hanging Bridges, located in a large reserve of primary forest, and are the perfect example of what ecotourism is. Journey on a trail through the rainforest that allows you to take in nature’s beauty at its most pristine state. With fourteen bridges from 5 to 100 meters long, you will get a 360° view of the tropical rainforest, and if the weather is on your side, you will see the most amazing views of Arenal volcano.

Have lunch in a local restaurant and then visit Proyecto Asis to learn a little more about the sloths. The Sloth Rescue Center is run by Proyecto Asis. Here, you will have an educational tour to learn about

The sanctuary’s purpose of rescuing and rehabilitating sloths that have been brought  there needing immediate attention. The tour will help you understand them better and you will get to know what it takes to care for them in order to release them, or to keep them if the first purpose is not an option. The design of the sloth sanctuary allows guests to see them in a safe environment that does not interfere with the animals, so that they can keep the rehabilitation process as it must be. You will learn their history to their liberation process and observe their natural behavior from platforms located right outside their enclosures.

After the sanctuary, head to Arenal Vida Campesina. Arenal Vida Campesina is a self-sustained, organic, cultural education center. On a guided tour will learn about the organic farm and appreciate traditional and non-traditional crops. Perhaps join an activity such as milking a cow, tortilla making, and tasting of sugar cane products.

Take a cooking class that will also include dinner.

At nightfall we head to the rainforest to discover one of the most interesting attractions that the Arenal Volcano area has to offer, nocturnal fauna. This experience will take you to explore the depths of nature at its most spectacular time. This activity is full of amphibians, reptiles, and insects for all those brave enough to enter the rainforest with nothing more than natural lighting and a flashlight, where the mysteries of the jungle will be discovered by you, along with an experienced naturalist guide.

DAY 6 – WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30 - ARENAL VOLCANO AREA – MONTEVERDE

Today enjoy the sights and the sounds of the rainforest and experience its peacefulness as you quietly paddle the Peñas Blancas river. Monkeys, sloths, iguanas, crocodiles, and numerous tropical birds await you! Your professional guide will share educational and interesting explanations of the plants and animals you encounter on the float. You will truly appreciate the wonders of Peñas Blancas river as you travel down the river without a motor. Make sure to bring your camera and binoculars on this tour!

After lunch you will travel around beautiful Arenal Lake and then ascend through the Tilaran Mountain Range on your way to Monteverde. Visit Santa Elena Town and then head to the hotel for the check in.

Take a night walk tour at Curi Cancha Reserve as this cloud forest allows you to explore a different type of forest, with the opportunity to make your own comparison between the biodiversity of a rain forest and a cloud forest, confirming once again that Costa Rica is full of natural treasures.

After breakfast, discover the enchanting world of sloths. Journey into the heart of the Costa Rican rainforest and witness sloths’ charming and slow-paced lives up close.

Your private tour at Selvatura Park Sloth Sanctuary is your gateway to an unforgettable wildlife adventure! Selvatura’s Sloth Sanctuary is a natural exhibit among the trees and foliage, which provides a safe distance that allows observation while having the least amount of stress on the animals as possible. These beautiful mammals arrived at the sanctuary as refugees from the effects of poaching, habitat destruction, orphanages, illness, and accidents which prevent them from being reintroduced to their natural habitat.

After lunch you will do a volunteer project at The Children’s Eternal Rainforest. The Children’s Eternal Rainforest is the biggest private reserve in Costa Rica and is part of the Water and Peace Biosphere from UNESCO. Your field work will include Bird Mist Netting and Tagging.

DAY 8 - FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1 - MONTEVERDE

This morning take a guided walk through The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve.

Throughout your hike around the Reserve you will be able to enjoy the fresh, cool air of the area, with the chance to see some of the most amazing animals roaming free in the forest: sloths, howler and white-faced monkeys, the three-wattled bellbird, keel-billed toucan, bare-necked umbrellabird, and the gorgeous ever fascinating quetzal.

Lunch will be at a local restaurant.

Visit a Coffee, Chocolate and Sugar Cane plantation. Your tour begins with a short walk through the farm where you get a glimpse of the sugar cane, coffee, and cocoa plantations. Experience the process of making the traditional sugar cane candy and finish with a fragrant cup of coffee and traditional dish of picadillo de arracache.

DAY 9 - SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2 - MONTEVERDE – SAN JOSE

After breakfast start your return trip to the city of San Jose.

Visit the beautiful town of Sarchí, known as an important hotspot of Costa Rican handcrafts. You will have time to see the artists in their workshops while they make the famous oxcarts, declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Search for your favorite gift to take back home as a souvenir of your visit to Costa Rica.
